The Arizona Republican insists that he wants a serious debate over the competing ideas and visions of the two parties, rather than the usual petty focus on process issues and gotcha questions.

Instead of opting for the traditional American electoral tactic of ignoring the jibes he has set up a special website to deny them. Mr Obama, the first African-American to win a major party's nomination for the White House, faces problems new to US presidential politics in a country burdened with a history of racism.

The news network referred to Mr Obama's wife Michelle as "Obama's baby mama", which is considered a derogatory term used for black single mothers. It has been interpreted as a further racial slur on Mr Obama and the latest instance where the Right-wing network has disparaged the Obamas.

VANCOUVER -- Colin Powell, the former Republican secretary of state, says he is not ruling out a vote for Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee for president. While Mr. Powell served in the administrations of two Republican presidents, he suggested yesterday his support for presumed Republican nominee John McCain is not a forgone conclusion.
