Small Texas School District Lets Teachers Carry Guns
By webreporter on Aug 19, 2008 in Featured
To deter and protect against school shootings, trustees of the Harold School District in are allowing employees to carry concealed (CCG) if they have a state permit and permission from the administration. The 110-student district lies 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth near the Oklahoma border.
More than a dozen state legislatures have considered making it legal to carry guns on college campuses, but experts and officials contacted by the Star-Telegram say the
move is unheard of in elementary or secondary schools.
Houston school districts said there's no way they'll follow the lead of Harold. a tiny North Texas school system that may be the first in the nation to let employees carry weapons on their 110-student K-12 campus.
Harrold Superintendent David Thweatt said his school board unanimously passed the policy last October to protect employees and students in the case of an armed intruder or hostage situation.
He wouldn't say how many teachers went through the authorization process, which includes receiving a Texas concealed handgun license and undergoing crisis management training.
I guess that’s one way of dealing with the growing violence in our nation’s school systems…….let the teachers even up things so maybe the worst that can happen is a “Mexican stand-off” or a “shot out” Texas sytle.
Many educators in other parts of Texas were stunned by the policy.
"It's a disaster waiting to happen," said Gayle Fallon, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers. "It's right up there with worst ideas in the history of modern education.
"When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that’s when all of these shootings started," Superintendent Thweatt said. "Why would you put it out there that a group of people can’t defend themselves? That’s like saying 'sic ’em’ to a dog."
Only in Texas!
