NEEDED: National Landmark Project for Ailing Democracy

I can recall few moments in recent memory that our country came together for a common purpose and that I felt proud to be an American.

There would be little argument that America is suffering from, among other things, low morale and self-esteem. There is more divisiveness than unity and we may very well be on a collision course with calamity unless massive action is taken.

We now have before us, unique opportunities to, one again, show the mettle of our country and its citizens to solve those problems plaguing everyone regardless of race, color, creed or political affiliation.  Poverty, universal health care, homelessness, and unemployment…… can you see the opportunities to achieve great things? I do!

On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced before a special joint session of Congress the ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the Moon before the end of the decade. We all know how that story ended.

Only the Panama Canal and the Manhattan Project were comparable in scope and impact.

The most important requisite for a landmark project is to set a lofty goal that would ideally impact the greatest number of citizens now and for generations to come.

Even though it was before my time, World War II seemed to have brought out the best in that generation earning them the moniker, “The Greatest Generation”. It took the threat of Adolf Hitler’s plan for world domination to rally Americans to unite and achieve seemingly impossible things.

We are now faced with what have been up to now, seemingly impossible things that we need to conquer to save the Republic. Our only obstacles are greed, ego and self interests…..and whose fault is that?
