ONCE……..THERE WAS A TIME
By Michael Lang on Aug 17, 2007 in INSIGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS
Once there was a time…..
, , and a summer of love…… long haired , peace and alter states of consciousness!
There was so much going on but most of all there was hope…..
JFK was gone but we still had Martin and Bobby promsing to get us there. We wern’t exactly sure where “there” was but we did know that it held the promise of peace and the botherhood of man our balladeers sang about.
Dylan sang “the times they are a changin” and we saw that as a good thing and we embraced it. Leary suggested we “tune in, turn on and drop out” and we followed his lead as our sacred Pied Piper.
Once there was a time called the “60’s”
……and Dylan got it right as everything was changing, the clothes, the music, the hair and most of all…the attitudes. It was no longer OK to settle and mutter, “that’s just the way things are supposed to be”. That was our parent’s mantra.
We had different mantras like, “we shall overcome” and “hell no we won’t go!” You see we believed that things could and should change and we were up to the task and tried. Oh boy, did we try!
A time when Martin promised us, “the promised land that he saw in a dream” and the next day, he was gone. Then Bobby spoke longingly of a future that seemed attainable but “only if we acted together in with a spirit of unity”……and that morning, he too was taken from us.
And there was a sadness in the land as America’s heart grew heavy.
So there once was a time, a time of hope and now for a time it would be gone and all we could hope for was to find it once again and begin to change that which is worth changing.
