Rielle Hunter, the one-time cocaine party girl and woman at the heart of the scandal is the daughter of the infamous , the man who taught how to electrocute horses as part of an insurance fraud scheme.

It appears that James Druck, an Ocala, Fla. attorney who represented insurance companies, personally taught others, including Tommy (the Sandman) Burns, how to rig the wires of an extension cord to electrocute valuable show horses so that their owners could collect on lucrative insurance policies.

Druck taught Burns how to slice an extension cord down the middle into two strands of wire; how to attach a pair of alligator clips to the bare end of each wire; and how to attach the clips to the horse—one to its ear, the other to its rectum. All he had to do then, says Burns, was plug the cord into a standard wall socket. And step back.

It was a near perfect crime for even the most-experienced pathologist would be unlikely to detect signs of death by electrocution—Many of the horses Burns electrocuted were assumed to have died of colic

According to federal agents, Burns destroyed some 20 horses, mostly show jumpers and hunters, on the show-horse circuit from Florida to Vermont to Illinois boasting that he, "killed three horses in one week."

The whole story was well told in a 1992 Sports Illustrated article titled, “Blood Money” which should get renewed interest as this Rielle Hunter/John Edwards scandal unfolds.

James Druck is deceased however his memory, or at least the sordid chapters of his life, are going to be unearthed and thrashed about the media and blogosphere before this thing dies down.
