Why is One Issue THE Litmus Test for Presidential Candidates?
By webreporter on Sep 2, 2007 in INSIGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS
If you were asked what is the one issue that is used as a pass or fail test question for presidential 'wanna bes', what would your answer be?
No, it's not things like AIDS, Poverty, Universal Health Care or a little thing called the War in Iraq......it's .

Yes abortion, the issue that has been over reported by every form of media since 1973 when the decided in Roe v. Wade that most laws against abortion in the United States violated a constitutional right to privacy under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Now I am not going to minimize the fact the the decision to abort a fetus is not important to all those concerned, however I contend that it is a personal decision and one that has been hypocritically used primarily by the so-called "Religious Right" as a rallying cry for injecting religion into politics.
......and guess what? They were very successful!
Yes, the Religious Right and other faith-based organizations were extremely successful in using the "abortion issue". wielding it like a weapon to be used against anyone that opposed them.
This strategy and the tactics they used had far reaching implications, some of which, they themselves did not foresee. Yes, they did want to bridge the gap between church and state, however it seems that they boxed themselves into a corner and became, for the greater part, a "one issue" movement.
I know it's probably silly of me to think that most god-fearing people would be concerned with insignificant things like feeding the poor and providing comfort to the suffering.
A question I always feel compelled to ask those that decide which side of the fence they will put you on by if or if not you believe in abortion is, "How come you care more about the fetus than you do about the child"?
You see, judging by the lack of health care and other vital services for children it would seem that once a child is born their job is done!
Like I always say, "behavior never lies"!
