Joe Lieberman Must Go!

Joe Lieberman is a war hawk, plain and simple. He staunchly supports George Bush’s War in Iraq and John McCain’s plan to stay in Iraq for 100 years. But Lieberman’s new alliance with the Republican Party runs even deeper. He has endorsed and stumped for McCain, wants to be the star of the Republican National Convention, and has even served on a 527 group that smeared Barack Obama with a nasty attack ad.

And yet still holds a top rank within the Senate Democratic Caucus as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The Senate Democratic Steering Committee needs to know just how much of a conflict of interest this is. That’s why we created Lieberman Must Go.

The Bush administration is currently trying to push Iraqis into accepting a long-term security agreement that would “perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely.” The U.S. demands include nearly 60 permanent bases in Iraq, immunity for foreign contractors, and control over air space.

Joe Lieberman asserts that Iraqi opposition to the U.S. Security Agreement is, “a sign of our success in Iraq.

Iraqi opposition to this bill is growing so intense that Iraqi parliament member Nadeem al-Jaberi recently testified to the House that 70 percent of Iraqis are in favor of the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Some more voices of opposition from prominent Iraqi officials:

“The Americans are making demands that would lead to the colonization of Iraq.” — Sami al-Askari, a senior Shiite politician on parliament’s foreign relations committee who is close to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki

“We rejected the whole thing from the beginning. In my point of view, it would just be a new occupation with an Iraqi signature.” — Jalal al-Din al-Saghir, a senior lawmaker from the Supreme Council

“What the U.S. wants is to take the current status quo and try to regulate it in a new agreement. … Signing the agreement would mean that the Iraqi government had given up its sovereignty by its own consent. And that will never happen.” — Haider al-Abadi, a parliament member from Maliki’s Dawa party

I, like many, are not sure why Joe Lieberman has chosen to take the path he has….a path quite different then the one he was on when running as Al Gore’s running mate in 2000. Somewhere along the way he drank some powerful “kool-aid” and for the good of our country’s short and long-term future….he needs to go!

Recently in Talking Points Memo (see Video below), Josh Marshall suggested that the best way to limit Lieberman is by encouraging the Steering Committee to render him powerless in 2009.

Lieberman Cites Reasons for Supporting McCain - Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) calls Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain his closest friend in the…

Novak: McCain Wants Lieberman As Running Mate - Columnist Robert Novak reports that presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Senator John McCain already has a favorite who he’d love to pick for Vice President: Joe Lieberman.

Democrats should turf Lieberman - Clearly though he is no Democrat based on foreign policy, his endorsement of McCain and his attacks on Obama. Do not be surprised if Lieberman ends up as McCain’s VP. It is too bad Ned Lamont wasn’t successful, but perhaps it explains …

Lieberman is a turncoat and an opportunist who watches which way the wind is blowing and goes in the direction that will be most advantageous to him. We need statesmen, not opportunists.
