Save the Fetus….Abandon the Child
By Michael Lang on Nov 19, 2008 in BEHAVIOR DOESN'T LIE
I can’t help but see the anti-abortion collective as hypocritical because they vehemently fight to save the fetus in the womb of a woman but than rail against any attempts to initiate programs to support children.
A case in point is George Bush’s vigorous support for the pro-life movement while vetoing the SCHIP legislation which would provide health insurance for families who earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid, yet cannot afford to buy private insurance. The program was created to address the growing number of children in the United States without health insurance.
Pro-life does not end at birth!
We’ve all seen the passionate, even fanatical protesters marching outside of abortion clinics, waving their “pro-life” signs and chanting the colorful slogans in support of saving the fetus.
But where are they on supporting those children born from those very same fetuses? Where do they stand and what are they doing to support pro-children issues.
Where are they after the child is born? Where are they when a child is neglected, abused or abandoned after birth? Where are they when the family may need services or financial help to keep their family together? Where are they when there is a need for foster or adoptive families to care for children after they have been abused, neglected or abandoned?
It is a vicious cycle that many pro-lifers do not want to take responsibility for, especially when that fetus belongs to someone immature or apathetic or unable, for any reason, to take care of a child, from birth and beyond.
This whole scenario is compounded by the fact that so many of the children affected by this cycle are born to poverty stricken families.
Are those pro-life thumpers going to get involve with that social ill or is their job done limited to the abortion clinic parking lot?
Let’s look at a few pertinent facts, OK?
- There are a total of 170,000 licensed foster care homes in the U.S.
- Over 120,000 children this year alone will have the parental rights of their parents terminated and be eligible for adoption
- Only 20% of these children this year will be adopted. The rest will continue to languish within the system because no family comes forward to adopt them. They are considered too old, too troubled, not the right gender or race.
- Over 20,000 children eligible for adoption will age out of the system this year with no family, no mentor or other tools available to them to become dependable, productive members of our society.
A recent study of young adults ages 18-24 and 2.5-4 years after aging out of the system shows:
- 33% will experience homelessness 12-18 months after leaving foster care. Three of ten of the nation’s homeless are former foster children
- 27% of the males and 10% of the females had been incarcerated (80 percent of prison inmates have been through the foster care system)
- 33% were receiving public assistance
- 37% had not finished high school
- 40% experience alcohol or drug abuse
So, to all of you pro-lifers, I have one question to ask you. Are you OK with the results of saving many of these fetuses? AND IF SO, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

The poor logic of the pro life - Many who are pro-life cite the laws that state that if a man harms a woman in such a way as to cause here to abort her fetus, then he is guilty of a form of homicide. They then go on to claim that it is a hypocrisy to then allow the …
