Bush and McCain Aren’t Listening

The good news: The media is covering Iraq again. The bad news: They’re dropping out the most important part of the story. Even Iraq’s own Prime Minister is demanding a timeline for withdrawal, but John McCain’s policy would keep us in Iraq for years to come. In fact, he wants to avoid talking about a plan for exit, since he doesn’t have one.

We’ve developed a rapid-response ad to make the issue crystal clear: Iraqis want a timeline that gets us out. Americans want us out too. But President and Senator aren’t listening to them—or us.

Barack Obama responded to the major developments on Iraq in a major speech yesterday where he reaffirmed his commitment to ending the war. He also pointed out that “George Bush and John McCain don’t have a strategy for success in Iraq—they have a strategy for staying in Iraq.”

He’s right. It doesn’t matter what the truth is when it comes to the reality of the war, John McCain and George Bush have the same answer: Stay.

But recent events around the war have been game-changing: The Iraqi government and the Iraqi people are demanding that our troops start coming home. Even some inside the Pentagon are arguing that we must set a timetable for withdrawal.

These recent events could be a major tipping point toward ending the war in Iraq—but we need to make sure they don’t get lost in the shuffle. We need to push these facts in front of voters and the media and we need to push John McCain to answer with a real plan for Iraq.

Instead, McCain continues to spew the same old mantra that we must stay and “WIN THE WAR.” After all, we can’t have another Vietnam, can we?
