How Would You Act If You Really Were Free?
By Michael Lang on Oct 14, 2007 in Political Commentary
“That government is best which governs least.….that government is best which governs not at all” – Thoreau
Sadly. in my opinion, there are many freedoms that we do not enjoy as our as the Legislative Branch of our government continues to over step the boundaries set by America’s founding revolutionaries, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill.
The roots of Modern can be found in the words and works of the gentlemen above. They believed, as I now do, in minimal government and the removal of the state out of private decision making.
This video features Congressman Ron Paul who is the closest incarnation to libertarian ideals of any politician in recent times, and one of the few politicians that “walks the walk”, meaning he practices what he preaches!
Americans are always boasting of our free and democratic society where you can grow up to be whatever you want to be and a man’s home is his castle.
I just wonder how much people truly understand those words that they so easily toss around…..words representing principles that many people deemed important enough to fight and die for.
Yes, I will admit that if any country deserves the moniker, the “land of the free”, it is the United States; but just how free are we?
Freedom……what is it and exactly how free are we, American citizens? Do you agree with the Henry David Thoreau quote at the top of this page? Think about it before you flippantly answer the question as I will be writing many more articles on what is means to be a “libertarian”, the word roughly meaning “believer in liberty”.
