PATRIOTISM: Its Definition, Ethics and Abuse

in its most simplistic terms suggests the loyalty that all citizens owe to their country or nation. With varying degrees of intensity, most Americans claim to be patriotic citizens of the republic. Individual patriotism is voluntary and can be highly emotional as can be witnessed by the singing of the national anthem and displaying the flag.

During the 20th century, the Veterans of Foreign Wars have tried to claim a monopoly on American patriotism and have often questioned the loyalty of citizens who disagreed with their objectives. SOUND FAMILIAR?

As a result, the word patriot began its strong association with the Right in politics, partly because the Left often advocated for international causes that the opposition used to mark them as unpatriotic which they continue to do to this day.

The fate of the Left was sealed during the Vietnam War when they opposed the war and tried to end it which the Right denounced as disloyal. SOUND FAMILIAR?

Unfortunately for genuine patriots, its labeling has shifted even farther to the right and has been associated with and used by paramilitary militia and white supremacist movements around the country. Ironic considering that these mutants have destroyed anything that was true and pure concerning patriotism.

And while we are speaking about abominations, let’s points out the unconscionable ways that the Bush Crime Family has wielded the word patriot as weapon to back off anyone that challenged them on any issue. This becomes especially heinous due to the fact lives are being lost during an illegal war and their ultimate sacrifice is being used for political purposes.

Their sordid tactics not only demeans the soldiers now fighting in but all those that died in all wars for genuine causes. Not so Baby Bush can redeem himself in the eyes of all those that know his real character as the punk that failed in everything except politics where even scumbags can rise to the top.
