The Priorities of OUR Congress and OUR Congresspeople
By Michael Lang on Sep 23, 2007 in Political Commentary
The informed readers of TLR are most likely aware of the whole controversy surrounding MoveOn.org’s “General Betray Us” advertisement and the Senate resolution condemning it which passed 72–25.
Now I could easily go into the ins and outs of this whole affair questioning why the Senate, which constitutes half of the legislative branch of the United States, gets the wherewithal to condemn an advertisement no matter how offensive or even inaccurate it may be.
That ad and its contents is not up for debate in this article. What is up for debate and something that greatly concerns me and should you is the fact that our Congress wastes its time on issues that is none of their business.
Let’s make some things crystal clear. The job of our Congress is not to shape public opinion by the endorsing or concerning of our media or to legislate the morality of U.S. citizens.
Most of the duties and responsibilities of our Congress, that is the Senate and House of Representatives, is specified in Article I of the Constitution of the United States.
With all of their committees, forums, special inquiries, party functions and of course, the passing of “resolutions” condemning advertisements, it is no wonder that the actual “business of government” is never conducted.
Let me pose another much more serious thought to be pondered. If there are 24 hours in every day and our elected legislators are busy with:
- infighting,
- protecting their jobs
- preparing for their re-election
- participating in every kind of meeting imaginable
- and other activities other than those specified by the Constitution
Then when do you think they will get around to dealing with things like:
- Universal Health Care
- Balancing the budget
- Educating our youth
- Poverty
- HIV/Aids and other curable or arrestable illnesses
