Boxers or Briefs, Christian or Mormon, Black or White…..Who Should I Vote For?
By Michael Lang on Dec 7, 2007 in POLITICS
Presidential candidate and former Governor of Massachusetts, has been put in the unfair and untenable position of having to defend his religion and personal belief system to the American people. Any intelligent person and true American would have thought that we dismissed this issue 47 years ago when then presidential nominee John Kennedy convincingly declared that he was an American running for president who happens to be Catholic, not a Catholic running for president who would take orders Vatican.
If being the President of the United States is one of the most difficult jobs in the world then being a great President has then got to be ten times that. Prerequisites for achieving that range from communication, diplomatic and organizational skills, to a superior intellect and an integrity strong enough to make the tough decisions without succumbing to temptations and the aphrodisiac of power.
The current debate focused on Mitt Romney and his membership in the “whatever” religion is not and should not be an issue in this or any other political campaign in these United States!
Follow this logic: If someone who refuses to consider voting for a person “of color” is justifiably labeled a racist and someone who would dismiss the election of a woman is rightly labeled a sexist; then the person that considers the religion of a political candidate when deciding who to cast their vote for should then be labeled a bigot….RIGHT?
One of America’s claims to fame and strongest messages to the world is that we are “the melting pot.” The melting pot is a metaphor for the way our society has developed; people of different cultures, races and religions all are combined so as to develop a multi-ethnic society.
A society with no one class or group of people more deserving or better, in any way, than the other and all equal in the eyes of the law.
So alluding to this article’s title; a persons underwear, religion, and/or color should not be considered or even a topic for serious conversation in this, very crucial presidential election
There are many reasons why our country has endured over the last 231+ years with the division of church and state deserving a large share of the credit.
