Clinton misstates Obama’s stance on healthcare
Boston Globe - United States
Senator Hillary Clinton, who has accused rival Barack Obama of sending misleading mailers to voters about her healthcare plan, misstated his healthcare views before an audience yesterday in rural Ohio.
Obama, Clinton err on NAFTA
Toronto Star - Ontario, Canada
It’s an old American political game, and Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are at it again in their scramble for the US Democratic presidential nomination. Under George Bush’s regime, it has been about security. This time, it’s about trade. In a debate in Ohio this week, Clinton bluntly vowed to tell "Canada and Mexico that we will opt out (of the North American Free Trade Agreement) unless we renegotiate the core labour and environmental standards." Not to be outdone, Obama quickly echoed her: "I think actually Senator Clinton’s answer on this one is right."
Obama says he’ll surpass Clinton’s $35-million month
Globe and Mail - Canada
AP WASHINGTON — More than doubling her January fundraising total, Senator Hillary Clinton’s advisers said yesterday that she will raise $35-million in February, a figure rival Senator Barack Obama’s campaign said it would surpass. The $35-million would be Ms. Clinton’s biggest fundraising mark yet and represents a remarkable recovery for her campaign. Mr. Obama raised more than she did last month, $36-million to $14-million, and she was forced to lend her campaign $5-million.
The obstacles facing Clinton
Boston Globe - United States
But there’s a more fundamental problem confronting Hillary Clinton: Obstacles from the past sit athwart the comeback route she’s trying to navigate. With Clinton facing make-or-break March 4 contests in Texas and Ohio, her campaign is striving to pump more voting-issue voltage into foreign policy and the economy in the belief that Clinton’s greater Washington experience means both matters should work to her advantage.
Did media move Clinton from front-runner to underdog?
Seattle Post Intelligencer - USA
Hillary Clinton because of her gender? It’s an open question and one I’m not prepared to answer. But Tuesday night’s debate in Cleveland certainly blew open some angles for examination. First, there’s the time question: Who got more of it? According to The New York Times Web site’s Democratic debate analysis page, Clinton spoke for 30:43 while Sen. Barack Obama spoke for 38:17 (the moderators spoke for 16 minutes). So Obama was allowed some 25 percent more critical time on-camera.
For Bill Clinton, changes come too late in the campaign
National Post - Toronto,Ontario,Canada
Bill Clinton’s sudden restraint on the campaign trail may be coming too late for his wife. Once considered to be Hillary Clinton’s ace in the hole, the 42nd president is now being widely blamed for helping send the former first lady’s own White House campaign into a tailspin ahead of March 4 primaries in Texas and Ohio.
