The Supreme Irony of George “Christian Soldier” Bush - The Eradication of Christians in Iraq
By Michael Lang on Dec 3, 2007 in RELIGION - OR LACK OF
One of the great ironies of George “Christian Soldier” Bush’s war is that since the invasion most of Iraq’s population has either fled, been killed or attends church services in secret for fear of being killed.
Personally, I was surprised to discover the depth Christianity’s history in Iraq until I read that the Christian community took root there after the Apostle Thomas headed east after the death of Jesus.
But now, after nearly 2,000 years, Iraqi Christians are being hunted, murdered and forced to flee — persecuted on a biblical scale in
The only man in Iraq’s Christian community willing to speak out openly is the Reverend Canon Andrew White, an Anglican chaplain who was first sent there nine years ago by the Archbishop of Canterbury. He has a fanatical determination to save the last Iraqi Christians from the purge, but admits that he is fighting a losing battle.
Vicar of Iraq Interviewed by 60 Minutes
“The situation is now clearly worse” than under Saddam, White said. “There’s no comparison between now and then. Things are the most difficult then they have ever been for Christians. Probably ever in history. They’ve never known it like now.”
Saddam, it appears, treated Christians much the same as Muslims. Before the war, Iraq boasted an estimated one million Christians who free to worship, build churches and speak Aramaic, the ancient language of Jesus.

Christians of Iraq trace their ancestry to the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians and are known by various names including Assyrians. During Saddam’s wars with the Kurds hundreds of Assyrian villages were destroyed and their inhabitants were rendered homeless, driven out of their historic homeland, and scattered as refugees. Dozens of ancient churches, some dating to the early centuries of Christianity were bombed and turned into rubble.
The teaching of the Syriac language was prohibited and Assyrians were forced to give their children Arabic names in an effort to undermine their true identity. Those who wished to hold governmental jobs had to sign ethnicity correction papers which declared them arabs.
The fall of Saddam which was hoped to bring peace to Iraq has unleashed religious violence against the Christian community in Iraq. Unless special attention is given to their plight by the US and the Iraqi government this ancient people will continue to suffer grievously as they have in the past, which as I stated above, is amazingly ironic due to Bush’s messianic zeal and belief that it is god’s will that we bring democracy to the Middle East.
· Bethlehem and Nazareth, the most identifiably Christian towns on earth, enjoyed a Christian majority for nearly two millennia, but no more. In 1922, Christians slightly outnumbered Muslims in Jerusalem and today they make up less than 2% of the city’s population.
· In Turkey, Christians numbered 2 million in 1920 but now only a few thousand remain.
· In Syria, they represented about one-third of the population early last century; now they account for less than 10%.
· In Lebanon, they made up 55% of the population in 1932 and now under 30%.
It bears noting that Christians are appearing to repeat the Jewish exodus of a few decades earlier. Jews in the Middle East numbered about one million in 1948 and today total a mere 60,000 outside of Israel.
