Before educating myself on the history, definition and current usage of , I, like many others never thought of it as a particularly “good thing”. It seemed that every time I heard or read the word, it was used in a context along with violence, intolerance and holier than thou attitudes. Whether it be Christian, Islamic or Presbyterian Fundamentalism; remove the dogma and the same person remains.

Fundamentalism is a term with differing meanings and definitions, some of which were controversial enough to divide families, congregations and whole nations. The original usage was used to describe a narrowly defined set of beliefs that developed into a movement within the U.S. Protestant community and has often been characterized by its intolerance of other views and opposition to secularism

Much of what we read about or see on the evening news has to do with either Christian or Islamic Fundamentalism. Modern Christian fundamentalism has become associated with reaction against social and political liberalism and rejection of the theory of evolution. Islamic fundamentalism appeared in the 18th and 19th centuries as a reaction to the waning of political and economic powers, asserting that Islam is central to both state and society and advocating strict adherence to the Koran and to Islamic law supported if need be by jihad or holy war.

Now we have heard many times the “jihad” rap from those that have bastardized their own religious doctrines and teachings just the same way we heard the “pro-lifers” promote the bombing of abortion clinics to illustrate their love for the fetus, The fetus? What about the fully evolved fetus otherwise known as an adult living being?

Do you see the insanity? Can you even begin to measure the depth of their hypocrisy? It’s mind-blowing to any rational human being!

So next time you hear the word fundamentalism you might be better prepared to fend off the onslaught of self-righteous propaganda that’s about to come your way.
