Be a New and Improved Atheist….BE A BRIGHT

Atheism, the term, the ist is so passe….so old school that it does not do myself, the user, any justice.

Identifying myself as a Bright is a better description of who I am and what I believe however the moniker has the drawback of not being well recognized therefore requiring further explanation….which is a hassle.

Consider the multitude of other ways to describe a non-believer: Agnostic, Atheist, Bright, Ethical Culturalist, Freethinker, Humanist, Infidel, Naturalist, Nihilist, Non-believer,Non-theist, Objectivist, Realist, Rationalist, Secular Humanist, Secularist, Skeptic, Transhumanist….and I am fairly certain that there is more!

The term Bright was coined by Paul Geisert and Mynga Futrell in an effort to dispel with many of the above classifications as well as move away from the stigma or prejudices of  being a “atheist.”

The Brights movement is a social movement that aims to promote public understanding and acknowledgment of the naturalistic world view. It was co-founded by Paul Geisert and Mynga Futrell in 2003. The noun 'bright' was coined by Geisert as a positive-sounding umbrella term, and Futrell defined it as "an individual whose world view is naturalistic (free from supernatural and mystical elements)".
