BEING A “bright” - A Personal Note:
By Michael Lang on Sep 30, 2007 in RELIGION - OR LACK OF
I have always felt uncomfortable, sometimes taking offense at being characterized as "godless" after disclosing my beliefs and worldview. The term godless focuses on what I am not or what I lack and says nothing about what I am or possess as far as beliefs or moral direction.
Even though I do not normally subscribe to pigeon-holing, I was actually relieved to have discovered a term that best describes my worldview……."bright"
A bright is an individual whose worldview is naturalistic, or free from supernatural and mystical elements.
On a personal note, I, at first, felt somewhat insecure as I "let go" and transitioned from having an eclectic worldview with a doubting belief in a higher power to an outright rejection of the supernatural.
My mother used to tell me how jealous she was of the people who believed in god without a shadow of doubt as she assumed that they were happy and found great comfort in their belief.
However naive her assumption was I have come to find my own comfort with rational thought and realized that security can always be readily found in delusional thought whether it be Santa Claus, a child’s "pretend friend" or god.
