Andrew,
Thanks for your honest response to the article. With all of the political debates going on, the media forgets to remember the emotional toll these issues take....whether you are gay, atheistic or both.
I also understand your anger and frustration when you describe your opinions about religion being incediary. I have written much on the murder and mayhem either committed as a direct result of religion or in its name. It enrages me immensely!
Thanks also for the sarcastic Mormon comment as it is mainly humor that often gets me through the day with going postal on the innocent...ha,ha....

Thanks for your very interesting article. I live in the heart of the Bible Belt ( Georgia ) but live in a liberal city ( Atlanta). I am Gay and have been out many years. If someone asks about my religious beliefs I just say that I am a non-believer. But people almost never ask. I have several Gay Catholic friends but they don't seem to take religious doctrine very seriously and nobody I know seems to care if I go to church or not. My family are all conservative Southern Baptists but we have an unstated don't ask don't tell policy that seems to work. ( relieving myself of my Baptist indoctrination was a long hard process -- once those Baptists get in your head at an early age it is hard to get them out.) I have found that most Gays I have known show little prejudice against non-believers - even the ones who are religious themselves. Most Gays who were raised in a highly homophobic religion have left since they are not wanted there and either changed to a more accepting denomination or lost interest in religion altogether.

My personal opinions about religion are, I'l admit, incendiary - I believe that organized religion is organized superstition, and Christianity is a nest of hypocrites. The ultimate origins of the universe are unknown and always will be. But I keep those opinions to myself since I want to keep some friends here in Georgia, and only discuss my more militant thoughts with my other atheist friend in Seattle where I used to live. You should hear what we say about the Mormons.
