After events like and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, people around the world dug deep into their pockets contributing millions in money, goods and services to all those in need.
The tremendous outpouring of support that is given after such catastrophic events is a testament to the depth of empathy and generosity that humankind is capable of. It is sad, however, that the level of compassion cannot exist as the rule and not the exception.
It is like the spirit of Christmas that permeates the air after Thanksgiving through the New Year but is nowhere to be found the other 11 months of the year.
There are literally thousands of Hurricane Katrina-like events that happen every day all over the world, most of which are not seen on the evening news or page one of our newspapers, hence they receive no support!
If all of the above is true then what can the average citizen do to alleviate suffering, injustice and inequality in the world?
President Bill Clinton has a solution!
Clinton has formed two organizations, MyCommitment.org and the Clinton Global Initiative which complement each other; The first focuses on what individuals can contribute while the second targets larger entities such as corporations and governments. Both organizations are focused on and designed for results.
The Clinton Global Initiative brings together global leaders including heads of state, non-profit organizations, charities, and business leaders to discuss challenges facing the world today and devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. The initiative culminates in an annual conference, at which each invited guest must make a specific commitment to address one of the focus areas discussed. CGI staff then monitors the progress and success of these commitments throughout the year.
MyCommitment.org aims to provide all people – regardless of age, income or where you live – with the resources to take action and make a real change in their communities and around the world.
Launched in 2007, MyCommitment.org reflects President Clinton’s dedication to promoting citizen service as well as utilizing inspiring individuals and organizations, taking innovative and unique approaches to solving some of the world’s biggest challenges.
President Clinton’s efforts are inspired by the idea that as global citizens, we all have the unprecedented ability to help each other achieve their dreams and realize a better future. Anyone…..regardless of age, income, education or where you live….can do something that has a lasting impact and makes a difference in the iives of others, both down the street and around the world.
