NET NEUTRALITY - YEA or NAY?

Network Neutrality, also known as “” is the guiding principle that preserves the presently free and open Internet.

Pioneers like Vinton Cerf and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, always intended the Internet to be a neutral network so Net Neutrality has played an integral part since its inception.

In simple terms, Net Neutrality:

  • means no discrimination
  • prevents Internet Service Providers (ISP) from speeding up or slowing down of Web content based on its source, ownership or destination
  • stimulates economic innovation, democratic participation and free speech online
  • protects consumers rights to use any equipment, content, application or service

With Net Neutrality, a networks only job is to move data!

The nation’s largest telephone and cable companies want to get rid of Net Neutrality as they want to be the only gatekeeper to the networks. They have a new vision for the Internet and believe me, it’s not an even playing field!

So far, the Government has shied away from its usual modus operandi of legislating everything within its purview .

We all, including myself, take the Internet for granted and forget what an amazing communication and technological marvel it is.

Although I do not usually advocate that legislation be used to regulate morality, behavior or commerce; I do believe that writing Net Neutrality into law would preserve the freedoms we currently enjoy.

This way, the Internet will continue to grow, prosper and evolve thereby realizing its ultimate potential.
